Walk any trade show and every booth has the same wall of logos — CE, ISO, “GMP certified.” The logos are cheap. The underlying audits are not.

A certification is a third party saying: we audited this factory’s processes against a defined standard, and it passed. That’s genuinely valuable — it’s the closest thing to visiting the factory floor without getting on a plane. But the value is only as good as the scope: what products, what processes, and when it was issued.

A certification is like a driver’s license for a factory. The license says “this person can drive” — but it doesn’t tell you they can drive a truck, and it expires. CE Marking under EU IVDR

The IVDR (Regulation (EU) 2017/746) governs in vitro diagnostic medical devices in the European Union. It replaced the older IVDD in May 2022, with transition periods for existing products. The IVDR is significantly stricter: it requires more clinical evidence, unique device identification (UDI), and heavier post-market surveillance.

For a veterinary diagnostics exporter, CE IVDR is the gateway to the single largest regulated market. It’s not optional — it’s the table stakes for Europe.

ISO 9001 vs ISO 13485

  • ISO 9001 is the generic quality-management standard. It applies to any industry and confirms the factory has a documented, audited quality system. For diagnostics, it’s the baseline.
  • ISO 13485 is the medical-device-specific QMS. It layers on requirements that matter for diagnostics: risk management, traceability, and alignment with regulatory requirements. If you’re choosing between two factories and one has ISO 13485, that’s the stronger signal.

FDA and the US Veterinary Market

A common misconception is that veterinary diagnostics follow the same FDA pathway as human tests. They don’t. In the US, veterinary diagnostic products fall under the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), a separate regulatory track. Requirements vary by product type and intended use — some veterinary POCT products may be exempt or follow a lighter path, while others require registration. Always confirm the specific product’s status for the US market.

China: NMPA and Export

Within China, medical devices (including veterinary diagnostics in many categories) are regulated by the NMPA (National Medical Products Administration). For a manufacturer exporting out of China, the relevant question is whether they hold the necessary production and export licenses. For a buyer importing into China, NMPA registration applies. For most Western buyers, NMPA is less directly relevant than CE and ISO — but it’s a useful signal that the factory is legitimately licensed to manufacture.


The verification routine is simple and worth doing every time:

  1. Ask for the certificate number and scope. A real certificate has a number and a defined scope (product categories, processes).
  2. Check the scope covers your products. A factory with ISO 13485 for one product line doesn’t automatically have it for the reagents you’re buying.
  3. Check the expiry and issuing body. Certificates expire. Verify the issuing body is an accredited certification body (you can check against the accreditation body’s registry).
  4. Ask for the technical file. For CE IVDR, the technical file is the evidence behind the mark. A factory that can’t produce documentation is a red flag.

Beyond Certificates: QC and GMP

Certificates audit the system. Two things audit the product:

  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) — the day-to-day discipline of making consistent product. In practice, ask about batch traceability and lot-release testing.
  • QC release testing — does every lot get tested against reference materials before it ships? A factory that does 100% lot-release QC is a factory that catches its own mistakes.

The certificates and the QC discipline go together: the certificate says the system exists; the QC data shows it works.
